Workshop Description:
Join us for a discussion of cancer immune therapies. Though these are considered a new
technology in the treatment of cancer, early experiments with immune therapy date back to
the post -Civil War era. However, these therapies were considered too risky and were
shelved in favor radiation and chemotherapy. In the last decade, three main strategies have
evolved to recruit our own immune systems to fight cancer: generalized immune activation,
tumor unmasking, and t-cell activation. While we learn how to deploy and manage these
techniques, we also look to the future of immune therapy with hope for more personalized
and safe immune activation and cancer vaccines.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Juliet Penn is a board certified medical oncologist/hematologist who practices at UCLA
Health Cancer Care in Santa Barbara. She attended medical school at Tel Aviv University in
Israel and went on to complete her residency and fellowship training at UCLA Health. Dr.
Penn’s research focused on circulating tumor cell detection and testing for early
detection/management of breast cancer.
